This trend of love padlocks is thought to have started in the Hungarian city of Pécs in the 1980s (though some sources declare China or even Germany to be the place of birth of this habit), but N Seoul Tower’s locks are certainly among the most famous ones. At least, I had heard of them even before getting interested in the country’s culture and language.
For those who don’t know much about it, here’s a small explanation: the locks are hung to represent the love of the couples and, after hanging them, the owners are supposed to throw the key away, thus ensuring that they’ll never part. Apparently, the amount of keys disposed of was so big that the Tower administration placed signs asking the lovebirds to put their keys in special bins.
